O’Malley to Puerto Rico Saturday To Campaign on Changes to Bankruptcy Law; and Health-Care Improvements

July 29, 2015 (EIRNS)—Martin O’Malley will be the first candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination to campaign in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory. He will hold an event to highlight healthcare inequities, and meet with Democratic leaders there, the Washington Post reports.

O’Malley urged several weeks ago that Congress pass legislation that would allow Puerto Rico, burdened by debt, to negotiate with its creditors in the same way states can under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

Puerto Rico is scheduled to hold a primary election on March 13. It will send more delegates to the Democratic National Convention than 21 other states. One million Puerto Ricans live in Florida, and a large number in New York City, and influence the outcomes of votes.

O’Malley has been outspoken on immigration reform, both as Governor of Maryland and as a candidate. This month, O’Malley pledged to limit deportations and make other changes to what he calls the U.S.’s "inhumane" immigration system.
