Russia Pledges To Help Iraq PM Abadi Drive Out ISIS

May 22, 2015 (EIRNS)—Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow Thursday, noting that he had disregarded "certain forces" which had told him to cancel the visit.

Putin pledged to expand Russian support for Iraq, both in military equipment and oil and gas investments. "Our relations are developing very successfully, Putin said. "Our companies are working in your country, and we are talking of investments in the order of billions of dollars."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Moscow would try to meet Iraqi demands for weapons to the maximum, "to help ensure their capability to chase the Islamic State and other terrorists from their territory."
