Trump Using Italy as Bridge towards Iran

Sept. 27, 2018 (EIRNS)—According to a U.S. diplomatic source who spoke to the Italian daily La Veritá, “Washington cannot completely drop Iran for security reasons, and in the current scenario, Italy represents the perfect bridge, including because only Italy, among major European countries, showed willingness to work with Trump’s United States.”

Yesterday at the UN, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Earlier in the day, Conte had a working breakfast with Trump, and Conte’s diplomatic advisor Pietro Benassi had a long talk with National Security Advisor John Bolton, which focused on Libya, but also included Iran.

Conte also met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, while in New York.
