UN Waives Sanctions for Inter-Korean Railway Survey

Nov. 25, 2018 (EIRNS)—At the request of the South Korean government, the UN Security Council and its sanctions committee have granted a sanctions waiver to a joint survey by North and South Korea on the reconnection of their railways, according to diplomatic sources cited by South Korean Yonhap news agency. The U.S. on Sunday also waved its separate sanctions to allow the survey to proceed.

“Our government has stood by the principle of honoring the sanctions regime and working closely with the international community as we conduct key inter-Korean projects.... Our government’s consultations with the committee regarding the inter-Korean railway survey have now wrapped up,”

an official from the South Korean Foreign Ministry told Yonhap.

The move furthers the agreement between North and South Korea to connect roads and railways through the buffer zone that separates the two countries, which they hope to complete by the end of the year.
