Lavrov and Pompeo Discuss P5 Summit

July 13, 2020 (EIRNS)—State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus stated today:

“Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo spoke today with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Secretary Pompeo and Foreign Minister Lavrov discussed convening P5 leaders in the near future to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. The Secretary and Foreign Minister also discussed issues of mutual concern, including Afghanistan. The Secretary raised the issue of election security.”

Similarly, the Russian Foreign Ministry press release, pointing out the call was made at the initiative of the U.S., said:

“The officials had a detailed discussion of the preparations for the meeting of the leaders of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council proposed by Russia. They exchanged opinions on providing strategic stability in the context of the forthcoming meetings of the Russian-U.S. working groups on military and political subjects. ... They touched on other current issues on the international agenda and issues of bilateral relations.”
