Gen. Wei Fenghe Holds Bilateral Talks at Shanghai Cooperation Organization Ministerial in Moscow

Sept. 6, 2020 (EIRNS)—Chinese Defense Minister Gen. Wei Fenghe was in Moscow last week, meeting with the other defense ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He also used the opportunity to hold bilateral meetings with various of his colleagues. Wei held a meeting with Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, at which the two had previously agreed to deal diplomatically with their border dispute. Wei also said that the Indian government should keep control over their units on the border. India’s Foreign Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar had bilateral talks with China’s Wang Yi last week at the BRICS ministerial in Moscow, as well.

Other bilaterals Wei took part in included with Pakistan’s Rajnath Singh, and with his Russian host Sergei Shoigu, where they also discussed international and regional issues.

Wei Fenghe said that China has always adhered to the path of peaceful development and is committed to building a universally safe world. “The Chinese military is fully determined, capable, and confident to defend its national sovereignty, security, and development interests. It is willing to work with all parties to earnestly implement the consensus of the heads of state, carry forward the “Shanghai Spirit,” and continue to create a new situation in bilateral and multilateral military cooperation to safeguard the world.” And reflecting recent comments by President Xi Jinping, Wei said that the SCO should also react against “bullying” from other powers.
