Daily Telegraph: Putin and Xi Have Created a New Geopolitical Era

Feb. 5, 2022 (EIRNS)—London’s Daily Telegraph responded in horror on behalf of the British Empire to the joint statement that China’s President Xi Jinping and visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin released Feb. 4. Note that what they called a “new geopolitical era” would better be called a “new non-geopolitical era,” and a new paradigm for mankind as a whole based on peace through development.

Headlined “Russia and China Rise from Their Knees To Challenge U.S. Dominance—But a show of unity between Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping cannot obscure an unequal partnership,” senior foreign correspondent Roland Oliphant, writes: “Much of the statement released on Friday by Russia and China formally declares what has long been the case: that Moscow and Beijing have similar views and each other’s backs when it comes to quarrels with the West.

“But the message here is anything but routine.

“At a moment of immense international tension, Russia and China are asserting the arrival of a new geopolitical era.

“From now on, the dominance of the U.S.-led global West will no longer be taken for granted—or tolerated.”

Oliphant continues that: “After decades of humiliation, the world’s autocratic superpowers have risen from their knees and will now up-end the inequitable post-Cold War world order.

“The immediate winner here is Mr. Putin.

“On the brink of a war in Ukraine that he knows will cost Russia dearly if it goes ahead, the Russian president is in dire need of allies.

“Chinese economic and diplomatic support might just be enough to soften the blow of sanctions and isolation if he chooses to go ahead with an invasion.

“Even if he does not give the order for war, a tighter alignment with Beijing will help him project Russian power in what is shaping up to be a long and frosty Cold War Two.”

Oliphant then depicts his China narrative: “The document doesn’t mention Ukraine explicitly. Mr. Xi is not, to the best of our knowledge, handing Mr. Putin a blank cheque for war.

“But by throwing China’s full weight behind the grand bargain Mr. Putin has demanded from the West, he is giving Moscow much more leverage.

“The hope that Mr. Xi might be persuaded to restrain his ally or remain aloof—or conversely that Mr. Putin could be enlisted to help contain China—has been dashed.

“Mr. Xi gains a secure northern border and the knowledge he can rely on Russian backing for his own brewing confrontation with the United States and its allies in the Pacific.

“The new Eurasian axis will also make it impossible for the United States to pursue its strategy of reducing its European commitments in order to concentrate on the Pacific.

“That aspect of the deal is slightly less helpful to Mr. Putin, of course. But this is not an alliance of equals.

“Russia remains a superpower with global reach, a huge nuclear arsenal and an army that is battle-hardened and effective.

“But China is by far the richer, more populous and more powerful of the two. Russian policymakers may be wondering what price Beijing will extract for its friendship further down the line.

“For now though, they have a common goal: the end of Pax Americana,”

he concludes.
