Former Top NATO Officer Calls for Dissolving Atlantic Alliance as ‘Threat to Europe’s Security’

May 8, 2022 (EIRNS)—Movisol chairwoman Liliana Gorini and Italian business association leader Alessia Ruggeri informed EIR today that Gen. Fabio Mini, former Chief of the General Staff of NATO’s Southern Command, has called for the Atlantic Alliance to be dissolved as “a threat to the security of Europe.” In an interview published May 7 by AmbienteWeb, General Mini explained:

“NATO in the current configuration should be dissolved to create a new regional security structure more closely linked to the United Nations rather than to a single member state, and more representative of Europe in the field of international security management. In fact, NATO prevents Europe from having its own defense and security capacity; for over 20 years it has no longer been a defensive alliance; it has become a security threat in Europe; before the interests of its allies, it puts those of the United States and even those of states that incite war at the expense of European security. Each of these reasons is justified by a blatant violation of the Atlantic Treaty. So if you want to continue ignoring these reasons, it would be at least honest to completely review the terms of the treaty. In fact, Article 1 commits the parties to respect the charter of the United Nations and to settle any international dispute that jeopardizes peace and security by peaceful means. Enlargement was immediately an international controversy that jeopardized security and peace.” [Emphasis in original]

Later, “The Minsk agreements provided for the autonomy of the Donbass and were not realized. Merkel and Macron were the guarantors. How did they behave?” General Mini replied: “Badly and in a very ambiguous way. They both closed their eyes in the face of destruction that Kyiv was doing to the Donbass, which at the time were not separatists but autonomists in Ukraine. Kyiv interpreted Europe’s attitude as an endorsement of the anti-constitutional repressions and measures it carried out in Donbass.”
