China’s PLA Moots Military Response to a Possible Taiwan Visit by Pelosi

July 26, 2022 (EIRNS)—In response to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s stated plans for visiting Taiwan in August, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has stated that it would not sit idly by. Some of the potential countermeasures, which have been expressed through semi-official channels and are reported in Global Times, might include a PLA air force “escort” of Pelosi’s plane as she arrives in Taipei, a broader flyover patrol of Taiwan by the PLA (potentially declaring the entire island a “drill zone” and threatening to intercept any aircraft), or a missile test near the island.

Sooner or later, PLA aircraft will enter the airspace above Taiwan, says Global Times commentator Hu Xijin, who adds that Pelosi’s trip might be an opportunity to demonstrate to the international community that such a flyover is natural, rather than a provocation.
